Franco Gallippi's lectures: "Rome through Italian cinema"

Date:

01/26/2018

Franco Gallippi's lectures:

The Istituto Italiano di Cultura is pleased to present two lectures on Rome through Italian cinema held by Dr. Franco Gallippi.

Lecture 1

Friday, January 26, 10:00am to 12:00pm

Rome in Italian Cinema: From La presa di Roma to La grande bellezza

Dr. Franco Gallippi will guide you on an imaginative tour of the city of Rome through Italian cinema. Gallippi will focus on several important films by Italian directors who have given the world a unique portrait of the “eternal city”. From Italy’s struggle for a secular Republic (La presa di Roma, 1905) to an endless search of the meaning of this Republic (La grande bellezza, 2013), the city of Rome has been and continues to be the film set in which this drama unfolds.

Lecture 2

Friday, February 2, 10:00am to 12:00pm

Federico Fellini and the City of Rome

Phd Franco Gallippi explores Fellini’s intimate relationship with the city of Rome. The Maestro, whose favourite neighbourhood in Rome was the EUR business district, viewed the “eternal city” as a temporary film set. He was amazed, for instance, that an ancient site, where he had filmed a scene, continued to be where it was and not dissembled and stored for the next film. In fact, when asked in which city of the world he would live, he responded Cinecittà, which is in Rome, and in which he often reconstructed a Rome that was more real to him than the actual Rome.

The lectures will be in English
