What notions revolve around the terms modernity and postmodernity, modernism and postmodernism? How useful are they? In a straightforward and concise fashion, this volume explores the philosophical, linguistic, and ideological orientations that distinguish these cultural models, together with their links to economic and technological transformations. The passage from one model to another is exemplified through analyses of poetic and narrative texts, selected from Italian literature and related to coeval experiences in the fields of music, visual arts, and architecture. The issues of subjectivity, of identity, and of different versions of human reality make up the connective framework of the study. This book can be valuable to any reader interested in confronting the cultural paradigms that typify our past and the times in which we live.

John Picchione teaches Italian literature and culture at York University. His research interests include modern and contemporary Italian poetry and narrative, avant-garde movements, literary and cultural theory. He is the author of Dal modernismo al postmodernismo: riflessioni teoriche e pratiche della scrittura (Edizioni Università di Macerata, 2012), The New Avant-Garde in Italy: Theoretical Debate and Poetic Practices (University of Toronto Press, 2004), for which he has been awarded the 2005 Book Prize of the American Association for Italian Studies, and of Introduzione a Antonio Porta (Laterza, 1995). He is the editor of I discorsi della critica in America (Bulzoni, 1993), the co-editor of Twentieth-Century Italian Poetry: An Anthology (University of Toronto Press, 1993), Italian Literature in North America: Pedagogical Strategies (Biblioteca di Quaderni, 1989), and Edoardo Sanguineti: Literature, Ideology and the Avant-Garde (Legenda-Maney Publishing, 2013).
